India has become the leader in respect to the recycling of ships. The Parliament has passed the bill regarding the recycling of ships on 9th December 2019. India has also managed to agree with the Hong Kong Convention 2009 in the month of November this year. It instructs the global standards that should be maintained for ship recycling. This consent by India has been appreciated highly by Kitack Lim who is Hong Kong’s Secretary-General at the 31st IMO session that was held at the Headquarters of IMO which is in London.

The guidelines passed by the Supreme Court on the management of harmful waste that can be seen from the revised Shipbreaking Code 2013 that was being followed till now and all the provisions that the 2009 Convention of Hong Kong mentions have been merged in the 2019 bill regarding ship recycling. This bill defines ‘ship recycling’ as dismantling of the ship at a yard for recovering the components of it and to reuse the material and to take care of the hazardous materials recovered from the ship.More Link
