India has become the leader in respect to the recycling of ships. The Parliament has passed the bill regarding the recycling of ships on 9th December 2019. India has also managed to agree with the Hong Kong Convention 2009 in the month of November this year. It instructs the global standards that should be maintained for ship recycling. This consent by India has been appreciated highly by Kitack Lim who is Hong Kong’s Secretary-General at the 31st IMO session that was held at the Headquarters of IMO which is in London.

The guidelines passed by the Supreme Court on the management of harmful waste that can be seen from the revised Shipbreaking Code 2013 that was being followed till now and all the provisions that the 2009 Convention of Hong Kong mentions have been merged in the 2019 bill regarding ship recycling. When the Yacht Club of Hyderabad (YCOH) started in the year 2009, the founder of the club as well as the coach Suheim Sheikh had the dream to have children from amongst the neglected and marginalized community to access challenges of the sporting through Sailing. He wanted them to use the lessons they learnt here  and experiences to stand on their own two feet in the profession they chose when they grow up.

That life’s circle concluded recently as news of the Navy and Army selections surfaced with three sailors in the age  between 11 and 15 for recruitment. The three of them include Chakali Karthik and Santosh Banoth selected in Navy and John Yeroulu selected by the Army.

Sky’s Team Turn the Tide on Plastic is still hopeful of bettering their fortunes at the Volvo Ocean Race. The skipper Dee Carrari promised that the team would build on their experience from the first stage of the race ahead of their second sail.

The second stage is set for Cape Town, South Africa on November 5. Caffari hopes the team would at least better their seventh place finish in the first leg. Vestas 11th Hour Racing won the first leg whoch stretched from Alicante to Lisbon.

“We’ve learnt a lot and have got some good learning to take forward and I’m confident that the crew are going to make that happen,” she said.

The second leg is believed to be one of the longest and most difficult in the series of planned races for Caffari and her crew. She explained that the nice trade wind when they start off could change when they get to the tropics and then they could face no wind at all or light wind with big thunderstorms at the Doldrums. There is also the southern weather when they head south into Cape Town.

Despite all these and their poor start to the competition, Caffari remains confident that the team can still finish top in the second leg. She says they would battle it out with the other boats in the three weeks before the second stage while working on their tacticals.

Oman Air settled for the third place in the Extreme Sailing Series Act that finished in the Madeira Islands recently.

The last day saw a lot of changes, twists and turns that are characteristic of this type of extreme sailing competition. The ultimate third place finish acquired by Oman Air was an achievement they managed as they fought fickle winds that have been a persistent feature of Act 3 in Madeira Islands.

The finals saw a committed performance by the team. The double point’s race saw them cross into the second position, ahead of Alinghi and SAP team, but the scoreboard brought their final score to the third position. The start of the competition was strong for the team and there was a Funchal wind that was stable at the end, more so as compared to the kind of wind conditions they faced on previous days. That day saw a single race being held when the Oman Air was not able to add much to their tally. The third position they obtained in Act 3 in the waters of Madeira Islands has matched the results they obtained in the previous two Acts held in Qingdao and Muscat. More Link

A fearless photographer has sailed to Antarctica to click the beauty and the wilderness of the remote Continent. Italian photographer Massimo Rumi clicked the snaps of penguins, icebergs as well as the remote polar landscape during a 3 week yachting expedition at the end of 2015.
Speaking to a leading English daily, he told that Antarctica completely switched off the noise in his mind and he could feel each moment with drowning intensity. The photographer fulfilled his lifelong dream by traveling Antarctica on the 9-man, fifty feet sailing yacht.
He stated that he had been to over hundred nations, but what he was really missing was a remote and unexplored experience – a place where one can explore a real isolation, a place where all the things are untouched and different from all other places. This is when he thought of Antarctica. He got engaged into some research, looking for something different than the huge cruise-ships where you can find yourself with hundreds of people and you do not have much flexibility as well as freedom of movement.
